Dispur Police Arrested Declared Foreigner In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Declared or yet-to-be declared foreigners know how to blend seamlessly with the local populace in Assam – to evade arrest. This has been proved yet again on Monday when the border branch of Dispur police arrested a person, who had been declared a foreigner by a Foreigners Tribunal in 2018, from a rented house here. According to the Border Police, Zahirul Islam had a case (95/12) registered against his nationality in 2012. Foreigner Tribunal No. 2 in Kamrup (M) district heard the case (1765/15) and declared Zahirul a foreigner on October 31, 2018. During the hearing of the case, Zahirul claimed that he had hailed from Hathinimari in South Salmara district, but failed to substantiate his claim with documents. He was declared a foreigner by the Foreigners Tribunal.

According to the police, Zahirul had been working as a mason in Guwahati for the past twenty years, seamlessly blending with the local populace here. During his two-decade stay in Guwahati he had been staying in rented houses at Daranda in the Six Mile area. He stayed around 15 years in a single rented house and five years in another, both at Daranda.

According to the police, Zahirul will be sent to the detention camp in Goalpara on Tuesday.
