Guwahati: The State Government has released an additional amount of Rs 15.30 crore for various districts and sub-divisions for provision of gratuitous flood relief, in order to ensure that people receive adequate relief materials in an expeditious manner.
The Revenue and Disaster Management Department (R&DM) has issued the sanction letter in this regard to the Principal Accountant General of Assam.
According to R&DM officials, out of the sanctioned amount, Rs 5 crore has been earmarked for the Cachar district, which is the worst-affected area in the second wave of this year's floods. Silchar town and various other parts of the Cachar district continue to be submerged by flood water.
The officials said that five other districts are being provided Rs 2 crore each – Bajali, South Salmara, Baksa, Udalguri and Karimganj. An amount of Rs 30 lakh is being provided to the Bijni sub-division.
It may be mentioned that the gratuitous relief fund is used to provide various food items, including baby food, and tarpaulin sheets etc., to flood-affected people.
The State Government had earlier released around Rs 155 crore for various districts and sub-divisions under the head of gratuitous relief.
The Chief Minister has already directed the Deputy Commissioners concerned to provide adequate relief materials to the flood-affected people.
Meanwhile, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) sources said that apart from inmates of various relief camps, relief materials are also being distributed at various relief distribution centres. As on yesterday, there were 355 relief distribution centres across the State.
