GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has set March 31, 2022, as the deadline to fill up over 1 lakh vacant posts in different departments.

The latest official letter of the Finance (Staff Inspection Unit—SIU) Department sent to various departments stated that even though the validity period for filling up of essential vacant sanctioned posts from 2016-17 to March 31, 2021, was earlier extended, several departments have now moved the Finance Department for the further extension as the process of appointment in these departments could not be completed within the stipulated time for various reasons.

"It is now decided that the approvals already accorded by Finance (SIU) Department for the years 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 shall be extended for a period up to March 31, 2022. Approvals for filling up vacant sanctioned posts issued for these years shall remain valid up to March 31, 2022, and automatically lapse thereafter. All departments have been requested to complete the process for filling up of the vacant sanctioned posts already approved by the Finance (SIU) Department during 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 by March 31, 2022," the letter reads.

According to the letter, the departments may, however, furnish specific proposal for extension of validity of approvals issued by the Finance (SIU) department during 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 in cases where the specific posts could not be filled up due to the court orders or non-completion of APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) process with proper justification and copy of court orders etc.

The Finance (SIU) department through its letter has further asked all departments to examine if any posts that have been lying vacant for a long time, and lost their utility, could be abolished and submit a proposal to Expenditure Control branch concerned of Finance department as per procedures.

It may be mentioned that the first Cabinet meeting of the present BJP-led Government held on May 11 this year decided to give 1 lakh jobs to educated youths in the State. The Cabinet also constituted a committee headed by Finance Minister Ajanta Neog to find out the number of vacant posts in different government departments. The State Budget for 2021-22 tabled in the Assam Assembly on July 16 this year has mentioned that there are 1,00,043 vacant posts in 49 government departments.
