Periodic NRC update for inclusion of newborns

GUWAHATI: The decision on the proposal of periodic NRC update awaits the opinion of the State government and the final say from the RGI (Register General of India). The last date for submission of application for inclusion of names in the NRC was August 31, 2015, and the final NRC was published on August 31, 2019, after four years. The babies born during the past four years have not been included in the NRC, and more babies to be born now and afterwards will the missing in the updated NRC. And hence the NRC authority feels the necessity of periodic NRC update.

NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela has already submitted a proposal to the RGI for NRC update after every six months. On its part, the RGI feels that the State Government’s opinion is a must for periodic NRC update. At a meeting called by it recently, the RGI told the NRC authority to submit the proposal for period NRC update to the State Government that should send it to the RGI with its opinion on the issue. However, it’s the RGI that has the final say on the issue as NRC is an RGI subject.

Altogether 3,30,27,661 people (through 68,37,660 applications) had applied for inclusion of their names in the final NRC. Of these applicants, while 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible for inclusion, 19,06,657 were found ineligible for inclusion in the final NRC which was published on August 31, 2019.
