GUWAHATI: The Ministry of DoNER (Development of the North Eastern Region) has recommended three projects worth Rs 852.73 crore in Assam under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Schemes (NESIDS).

The inter-ministerial committee (IMC) of NESIDS had a meeting with the Secretary, Ministry of DoNER, in the chair in New Delhi recently. The meeting recommended the three projects in Assam. Assam placed eight projects at the meeting, and the IMC picked up three of them.

The projects include legacy waste treatment in 39 ULBs (urban local bodies) at a cost of Rs 102.73 crore. The Assam side told the IMC at the meeting that, as per an order from the NGT (National Green Tribunal), the dumps of waste in the cities are required to be cleared. The representative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs supported the proposal for legacy waste treatment.

The second project from the state is the “transformation of 65 schools in Assam into centres of excellence” at a cost of Rs 520 crore. The Assam side told the IMC that the NEP-2020 states that effective and sustainable infrastructure should be made available to the students. With this vision, the State Government wants to transform 65 senior secondary schools in Assam into centres of excellence. It also informed the IMC that it would implement the project in three phases, viz., 22 schools each under phase 1 and phase 2, and 21 in phase 3. The Department of School Education and Literary Affairs, Government of India, supported this proposal from Assam at the IMC meeting. After due deliberations, IMC recommended the project proposal of the transformation of 65 schools into centres of excellence at an amount of Rs 400 crore.

The third project is the “establishment of ten government model degree colleges in Assam” at a cost of Rs 350 crore. The Assam side told the IMC that the establishment of ten government model degree colleges was proposed in Assam, mostly in tribal areas, inter-border areas, and minority population areas. The proposal includes skill development for students, where principals of model degree colleges will train the students to develop different skills. The proposed sites of the ten moel degree colleges are Government Model College, Mariani; Government Model College, Dergaon; Government Model College, Kaliabor; Government Model College, West Karbi Anglong; Government Model College, Dholai; Government Model College, Lakhipur; Government Model College, Kalaigaon; Government Model College, Bijni; Government Model College, Nayer Alga in West Bilasipara; and Government Model College, Merapani. After deliberations, the IMC recommended Rs 350 crore for the establishment of ten government model degree colleges in Assam.

The State Government will submit DPRs (detailed project reports) for these three recommended projects to the DoNER.

NESIDS is a centrally sponsored scheme under the Ministry of DoNER with 100 percent central funding.
