GUWAHATI: State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that to make the state health sector one of the best in the country, the State would have 23 medical colleges in the coming four to five years.

The Health Minister said this at the function for distributing appointment letters to 71 teaching and non-teaching personnel of the Dental College and other medical colleges of the State on Saturday.

Addressing the newly appointed medicos, the minister said, "Never roam around health offices to get the posting of your choice. Be ready to render your service where you got your appointment. I am telling you this now not to repeat it later.

"We need doctors and nurses everywhere. We will have 23 medical colleges in the next four or five years. We aim to make the state health sector one of the best in the country. The construction of eight medical colleges is going on, and that of five more will start soon. A paradigm shift in the state health sector is possible only if doctors and nurses render their services with dedication.

"In the past four months, we appointed 1,941 people in the health sector. We will issue appointment letters to 8,855 others in the sector soon."

On the Covid-19 pandemic, the minister said, "We have not yet rid ourselves completely from the second wave of the pandemic. The apprehension of the third wave is always there. There are some restrictions amidst the maximum relaxations in the new SOP (Standard Operating Procedures). All should religiously follow the restrictions. We have already asked all government employees to get vaccinated before Monday. We have also asked all business establishments to put up posters in front with – we are vaccinated – written on them."
