GUWAHATI: The Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) on Saturday announced the name of noted singer Usha Mangeshkar as the recipient of the Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award 2022.
Announcing the award, AXX's president Dr Kuladhar Saikia said that the award will be presented to Usha Mangeshkar by Assam's Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi at a function to be held at the NEDFi House here on November 22 next.
The award carries a monetary component of Rs 5 lakh, a souvenir, an angavastra and a packet of books. The award is being conferred biennially since 2013 in collaboration with Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), Saikia said.
This year's recipient was selected from a shortlist of eminent artistes by a committee constituted for the purpose, he added. Mangeshkar was selected for her numerous notable songs in the Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Nepali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati and Assamese songs in general and her close association with Dr Hazarika in particular, Saikia said.
It may be mentioned that the first Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award was bestowed upon eminent Bangladeshi dancer, art director, researcher and cultural activist Lubna Marium. The award for 2015 was received by filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The award for 2017 was received by acclaimed filmmaker from Sri Lanka Prasanna Vithanage, while the award for 2019 was received by film director and producer from Singapore Eric Khoo Kim Hai.
