SILCHAR/GUWAHATI: The police recovered a huge drug consignment, the largest-ever narcotics seizure in the Northeast Indian region, as claimed by DIG Partha Sarathi Mahanta, from a village in the Karimganj district today. The market value of the drugs is said to be over Rs 100 crore.

Altogether, 5.10 kg of heroin and 64,000 Yaba tablets were seized at Superkandi village, 10 km from Karimganj town. The drive was led by DIG Mahanta.

According to Mahanta, it was a joint operation by the Special Task Force (STF) and the Karimganj Police. The operation took place when the consignment was en route to Guwahati from Mizoram and was intercepted in a small car (MZ-06A-1422) at Superkandi village.

Four individuals, including a woman, were arrested in connection with the campaign. They are Nur Ahmed (the driver), Zosangliani, Lal Cham Liana, and Ramngheaka. Barring the driver, who hails from Patharkandi, the other three are from Mizoram.

In July last year, drugs worth Rs 45 crore from Mizoram were intercepted by the police. In September last year, the Assam Police seized drugs worth Rs 21 crore from Jorabat.

According to police sources, after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared a war against drugs, the police seized drugs worth over Rs 2,000 crore in the past two years. The drugs were smuggled in from Myanmar via Mizoram.
