GUWAHATI: Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has informed the State Assembly that around 1,000 schools in the state need complete reconstruction, 2,000 other schools need major repairing and 1,000 schools need minor repairing.
During the Members' Hour, several legislators raised the problems in their constituency regarding health, education, roads, erosion etc.
On roads, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the House, "Repair works of bridges and roads are going on under various schemes. We have already taken schemes to construct around 1,000 bridges in various constituencies. We have also moved for external aid for various road and bridge construction works."
Responding to the issues raised by the MLAs, the Education Minister said, "The Chief Minister has earmarked Rs 10,000 crore for the repair of around 4,000 damaged schools in the state. Among the 4,000 schools, 1100 schools need construction anew. The reconstruction of the schools will be with a futuristic view in sight. Barring the girls' schools linked to certain heritages, the rest of the schools in the state will be of coeducation."
Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika said, "We are using innovative techniques based on experiments to keep erosion at bay. Using boulders is the most effective way to check erosion. However, boulders are not cost-effective, besides being scarce. We are experimenting with making alternatives to boulders by mixing sand from the Brahmaputra riverbed and cement. It will cut the cost to a large extent. Our experiment in using geo-bags after an interval of three porcupine lines has shown effective results. It will also cut the cost on geo bags."
On behalf of the Industries Minister, Pijush Hazarika said, "The State has 1.22 lakh registered small tea gardens contributing to around 44 per cent of green leave produced in the state. The deputy commission-led committee in each district monitors if the small tea growers get remunerative prices of green leave or not."
