GUWAHATI: Education Minister Ronuj Pegu has appealed to the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate)-passed students and their parents not to opt for admission into non-affiliated schools and junior colleges.

Talking to The Sentinel, Ronuj Pegu said, "The general perception doing rounds was that more students would pass the HSLC this year. In the past few days, there has been a mushroom growth of junior colleges in the state, especially in the Nagaon district, overnight. The sole purpose of such junior colleges is to cash in on the extra rush of students for admission in Class XI.

"As many as 3,97,132 candidates passed the HSLC examination this year. Taking that in view, we have decided to increase 49,639 more seats for Class XI in the government and provincialized schools and colleges. With these additional seats, the total seats for Class XI in the State will be 3,35,272. There are also seats in many affiliated private schools and junior colleges in the state. Thus, even though the pass percentage in the HSLC is high this year, the students will get seats.

"We are thinking of reopening classes for the students of IX, X, XI, XII and the final year students of colleges from September 1. We are taking up the issue with the Health Department as the Covid-19 situation is improving. We talked to the Chief Minister on this issue on Thursday. We're thinking of preparing an SOP (standard operating procedure) for the reopening of classes. If everything goes as planned, classes will start from September 1."
