GUWAHATI: The prices of eggs have gone up in Assam, purportedly because of the hike in prices in the source states. A pair of imported eggs now costs Rs 15, compared to Rs 12 a few days ago. Each pair of the local eggs branded as Bahubali costs Rs 20 as against Rs 16 a few days ago.

Anwar Hussain, a wholesaler of eggs running his shop from Muchkhowa in the city, said, "We don't have much to do on the prices of eggs. Egg prices go up in the source states, making us buy them at higher rates. We just add the transportation charge to the cost and sell. Three days ago, we sold eggs at the rate of Rs 1,100 per carton. Each carton contains seven plates, and each plate contains 30 eggs. Today we sold eggs at a rate of Rs. 1,260 per carton. The retailers buy eggs at this rate and add their transportation charges and some profit to sell them. And the prices of eggs may go up in the days ahead."

Hussain said, "We sell the local brand (Bahubali) at Rs 1,750 per carton now compared to Rs 1,600 per carton earlier".
