Guwahati: With a view to improving the success rate of candidates from Assam in various all-India level competitive examinations, including the UPSC, NEET, JEE etc., the state government has decided to set up eight training-cum-coaching centres for local aspirants. The government has also decided to set up support systems in major cities of the country which would provide all-round assistance to the Assamese diaspora.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave the go-ahead in this regard to functionaries of the Assam Youth Commission - which was constituted under the Assam State Youth Commission Act, 2022 with the twin goals of empowering the youth of the state and protecting their rights - during a meeting held here on Thursday.

The Chief Minister asked the Assam Youth Commission to immediately start two coaching centres for youth of the state who are preparing to appear in the UPSC examination.

It may be mentioned that there are less than 10 Assamese IAS officers at present, with the result that there is no scope for a local IAS officer to become the Chief Secretary of the state for the next decade or so after the incumbent Chief Secretary retires.

Consequently, the Chief Minister is laying emphasis on ensuring that more and more youth from Assam are able to crack the UPSC examination.

Simultaneously, the Assam Youth Commission will also set up six training centres for imparting coaching to aspirants of medical and engineering courses. Each centre will have 100 students, with provision for scholarships for meritorious students.

The commission will further set up and run 630 youth clubs – five in each Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) – to promote socio-cultural empowerment.

In so far as the proposed support system in major cities outside the state is concerned – such as Assam Sarothi - the aim is to ensure protection of the interests of the youth who are studying or working in these cities. The support system, which will be supervised by an ACS officer, will provide help and assistance to the Assamese diaspora in any emergency situation.
