GUWAHATI: As part of the preparations for the Lok Sabha election in 2024, the Election Commission of India has provided over 4,500 EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) to Assam. Following a directive from the ECI, the State Election Department has brought the EVMs to the state from Hyderabad.

According to State Election Department sources, an EVM has two parts: a control unit (CU) and a ballot unit (BU). The first-level checking of the existing EVMs in the state started on September 1, 2023. During the checking, the Department felt the necessity of providing additional EVMs (CUs) to the state for the smooth conduct of the Lok Sabha election. The department did move the ECI to provide additional EVMs. The ECI provided the control units following the request from the State Election Department.

Following all ECI protocol on transportation of EVMs, the State Election Department brought the additional EVMs to the state and stocked them in the districts.

ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India Limited), with its headquarters in Hyderabad, manufactured the EVMs that the ECI has provided to the state.

Following the ECI protocol, the new control units that have arrived in the state will have first-level checking (FLC) in the presence of representatives of political parties.

According to sources, the present stock of EVMs in the state is around 51,000 BUs, around 45,000 CUs, and around 46,000 VVPATs.
