GUWAHATI: In what could be termed as an inspiring development for the legal fraternity in Assam, the number of judges from the State elevated to the Supreme Court (SC) is increasing.

On Monday, Justice Hrishikesh Roy was sworn in as the judge of the SC. With Justice Roy, the number of judges from Assam to hold the coveted post of judge in the country’s apex court has gone upto 10. Justice Roy was the seniormost judge of the Gauhati High Court (GHC) before he became the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court a few months ago. He was appointed as the judge of SC last week.

Justice Parbati Kumar Goswami was the first Assamese judge from the GHC elevated to the SC in 1973. After Justice Goswami, nine seniormost judges of the GHC namely Justice Baharul Islam, Justice KN Saikia, Justice HK Sema, Justice BL Hansaria, Justice SN Phukan, Justice Dr MK Sharma, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Amitava Roy and Justice Hrishikesh Roy have so far been elevated to the SC.

Chairman of the Executive Committee of Bar Council of India Advocate Apurba Kumar Sharma told The Sentinel on Monday that it is a matter of extreme pleasure and pride that more judges from the GHC are being elevated to the SC. He said the development will enthuse and motivate the younger generation of lawyers.

“It was a historic moment for the entire North East when Justice Ranjan Gogoi from Assam became the Chief Justice of India in 2018. CJI Gogoi has already taken several initiatives to enable the Indian judiciary to face the emerging challenges and the timely delivery of justice,” Sharma, a senior advocate of the GHC said. He said that the rise in the number of judges elevated to the SC is also evident of the immense talent that Assam has in the field of legal profession.

“CJI Ranjan Gogoi is an inspiration for me. He inspires me to work with full diligence and dedication to reach the zenith of success in my legal career,” Shabina Ahmed, a young lawyer said.
