GUWAHATI: Veterinarians say that African swine fever is not a zoonotic disease (it does not spread from animals to humans).

African swine fever has occurred in Darrang, Udalguri, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Goalpara districts in a big way. The fever has no specific season for its occurrence. Awareness plays the key in the fight against this fever.

According to statistics obtained from Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, 40,159 pigs died of the fever in the state, besides the culling of 1,181 pigs, till July 11 this year since 2020.

The department identified 66 epicentres of African swine fever in 22 districts in the state. Around 400 pigs died of African swine fever this year, sources said.

The government bans pork around a 10-km radius of an epicentre of African swine fever.
