GUWAHATI: After SI Junmoni Rabha died in a road accident earlier this month, allegations had surfaced that she was investigating a case related to fake gold smuggling. At that time, Director General of Police GP Singh assured the people of the State that the police would decimate the business of FICN (fake Indian currency notes) and fake gold in the State in the next 30 days.

In the last two weeks, 160 people have been arrested on charges of fake gold smuggling in Assam. According to information, the highest number of arrests took place in the Lakhimpur district with 63 people already under custody, followed by 45 arrests in Sonitpur. The number of arrests in some other districts are 3 in the Kamrup (metro), 6 in the Kamrup district, 4 in the Barpeta district, 8 in the Nagaon and 1 in Darrang.

Police have seized huge quantity of fake gold and FICN.
