Fake PhD degrees! 58 college teachers of Assam under scanner

GUWAHATI: Fifty-eight college teachers of the state are under the scanner of the Higher Education Department. The department has doubts over the authenticity of the PhD degrees of these 58 assistant professors. Most of the 58 college teachers obtained PhD degrees from universities outside Assam.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma instructed the Department of Higher Education to verify the authenticity of PhD degrees of college teachers of the state cautiously, without leaving any legal lacunae.

Earlier, the Department of Higher Education examined the PhD degrees of around 2,000 college teachers in the state and had doubts over the authenticity of PhD certificates of 58 of them. The State Government formed a three-layer inquiry committee to leave no room for any lapses in the inquiry. Each of the three layers of the inquiry committee will verify the authenticity of the 58 PhD certificates. The committee will submit its report to the State Government.

Meanwhile, the State Government has decided to file police cases against college teachers whose PhD degrees are fake.
