Guwahati: Dispur has slightly slowed down the process of imposing 'speed limits' on roads following massive feedback from stakeholders in the form of opinions and suggestions. It feels every feedback needs critical examination, and speedy implementation of 'speed limits' may not be meticulous.
Earlier, the government wanted to impose 'speed limits' from April. It sought feedback on its 'speed limit' proposals from various stakeholders in the state.
The State Transport Department has received 30 responses from various stakeholders. The department feels that 'every response needs critical examination to see if the suggestions are commensurate with the MV (Motor Vehicle) Act and other Acts. It is a time-taking exercise, the department feels.
The department will prepare a note before placing the responses in the state cabinet for approval.
According to sources, the Transport department has 17 interceptor vans that monitor 'speed limits' in highways under its disposal. It will procure more such vans.
Sources said that the department would take a policy decision on 'speed limit' soon after seeing all pros and cons.
The proposed maximum speed limits on various types of roads in the state are – (i) 100 km/hour on four-lane NHs for motor vehicles (non-transport) with eight seats, in addition to the driver's seat; 70 km/hour on other PWD roads and 60 km/hour on roads within municipal limits, (ii) 80 km/hour on four-lane NHs for motor vehicles (transport) with not more than eight seats, in addition to the driver's seat; 60 km/hour on other PWD roads and 50 km/hour on roads in municipal limits, (iii) 70 km/hour on four-lane NHs for motor vehicles with nine or more seats, in addition to the driver's seat (transport and non-transport); 60 km/hour on other PWD roads and 40 km/hour on roads in municipal limits, (iv) 60 km/hour on four-lane NHs for goods-carrying vehicles, 50 km/hour on other PWD roads and 40 km/hour on roads in municipal limits, (v) 60 km/hour on four-lane NHs for motorcycles, 50 km/hour for other PWD roads and roads in municipal limits, and (vi) 40 km/hour on four-lane NHs, other PWD roads and roads in municipal limits for three-wheelers (passengers/goods).
