GUWAHATI: Floods and landslides this year claimed 192 human lives, the highest ever since 2016. Floods claimed 173 human lives, and landslides killed 19.

A district-wise analysis of the death tolls shows that floods claimed 42 human lives in Cachar, 28 in Nagaon, 17 in Barpeta, 9 in Darrang, 9 in Hojai, 8 in Kamrup, 7 in Karinganj, 6 in Morigaon, 6 in Lakhimpur, 5 in Dhubri etc.m in this season.

According to government statistics, floods claimed 64 lives in 2016, 160 in 2017, 45 in 2018, 101 in 2019, 124 in 2021 and 8 in 2021.

Most of the deceased lost their lives in the floods due to their casual attitude and lack of awareness. Many children lost their lives due to the negligence of their guardians. Awareness drive on the flood is something the government needs to lay stress on in the post-flood period.

Meanwhile, nine districts in the state are still reeling under floods, affecting over 2.94 lakh people in 642 villages. Over 19,000 people are taking shelter in 83 relief camps in the state. In the Cachar district, 17,000 people are staying in relief camps.
