GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam worsened following incessant rains in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for the past few days. The deluge has inundated as many as 77 villages in 17 revenue circles in eleven districts in the state. Lakhimpur district alone has 22 affected villages.

The affected districts are Biswanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Cachar, Jorhat, Kamrup (M), and Nalbari. The last four districts have urban floods.

According to the evening report of the CWC (Central Water Commission), Guwahati, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Nematighat in the Jorhat district and the Puthimari River at NH Road Crossing in the Kamrup district.

According to the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority), as of date, the floods have affected 34,189 people: 15,727 males, 14,675 females, and 3,787 children.

So far, the administration has set up one relief camp at Kalaigaon in the Udalguri district, where 21 people are taking shelter.

The report of the ASDMA further said that reports of landslides were received from Hajo and Haflong. The floods affected 68.80 hectares of crop areas in the past 24 hours.

Apart from standing crops, the surging waters breached the Narayanpur-Farm Bundh (Lakhimpur district), Harisinga-No. 2 Singrimari Suklai river embankment, and Kalaigaon-Embankment at Gerua in the Udalguri district.

The Mora Pagladia river breached a forty-metre stretch of the PWD road at Bali in the Nalbari district.

Meanwhile, the Inland Water Transport (IWT) department has prohibited private ferry services to and from the river island due to the rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra.

Reports of damage to infrastructure and erosion keep coming from several districts.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, has issued a fresh special weather bulletin for Assam, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning likely to continue over Assam during the next five days.

A correspondent from Dibrugarh adds: Due to the rising water level of the Brahmaputra river, many areas of the Dibrugarh district were inundated.

According to reports, river water has been overflowing over the Ring Bund in the Maijan area.

The people of Maijan were panicked after the overflowing river. Every year, the Maijan area is affected by flooding and erosion.

Officials from the Water Resources Department reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

“River waters enter this particular area every year. A 1400-metre embankment project has been going on to stop the river water from entering the Maijan area. 85 percent of our work has been completed. Due to the low-lying area, the river water enters the Maijan,” said an official of the department.

On the other hand, erosion has been going on in the Kolia ghat area and Puja ghat area of Dibrugarh for the last several days.

Meanwhile, restoration work has been going on to stop erosion.
