GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the state has taken a turn for the worse since this morning following rains in some areas, leading to a rise in the water levels of the rivers. So much so that flood water has submerged National Highway 15 at Balipara in the Sonitpur district. The situation did improve a bit yesterday.

According to the evening bulletin of the CWC (Central Water Commission), the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger levels at three stretches: Neamatighat in the Jorhat district, Tezpur in the Sonitpur district, and Dhubri in the Dhubri district. The mighty river is maintaining its rising trend in Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Goalpara. Two other rivers-the Dikhou and the Beki-are also following above their danger levels in Sivasagar and at the Road Bridge in the Barpeta district. A few other rivers maintaining the rising trends are Burhidihing, Dhansiri, Puthimari, and Disang.

According to the flood bulletin of the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority), as of date, six districts in the state-Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, and Uudalguri (urban flood)-have been reeling under floods. The floods have affected as many as 53,343 people in 120 villages in the state. Reports of damage to infrastructure and erosion keep coming from various places. SDRF and NDRF personnel have been pressed into rescue operations in the flood-affected areas of the Sonitpur district.

Meanwhile, the RMC (Regional Meteorological Centre), Guwahati, predicted light to moderate rainfall in most of the areas in Assam in the next 24 hours and heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few other areas. RMC has sounded orange alerts (be prepared) in Barpeta, Baksa, Nalbari, Dima Hasao, and Cachar districts.
