GUWAHATI: The waters of the Brahmaputra and the Desang in upper Assam and the waters of the Beki in lower Assam have aggravated the flood situation in the state. The situation may deteriorate in some areas as the Baksa district administration sounded an alert that Bhutan will release water from the Kurichhu dam at midnight.

The Royal Government of Bhutan issued a press release and said that the water stored in the reservoir of the Kurichhu Hydropower Plant would be released in a controlled manner from midnight onward until the reservoir level is fully depleted. By around nine hours, it is expected that the river will have a free flow to avoid any untoward incident downstream of the power plant, the release said.

The number of affected villages in the state has increased to 179 today from 133 yesterday. The number of affected districts has also increased to ten today from seven yesterday. The total number of affected people in the state is 41,286. The breakup of the affected villages is: 46 in Chirang, 51 in Dhemaji, 22 in Biswanath, 17 in Dibrugarh, 16 in Bongaigaon, and 19 in Majuli.

Twenty-eight relief camps give shelter to 2,731 inmates.

The Beki has overflowed roads in several places. Roads submerged or damaged by flood waters are at Dangtol, Srijangram, Nilambazar, Badarpur, Nowboicha, Sarthebari, etc.

Flood waters damaged infrastructure at Chabua, Ujani Majuli, Manikpur, Sonari, Dotoma, Gossaigaon, Bihpuria, etc.
