GUWAHATI/LAKHIMPUR: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, yet again predicted heavy rainfall for five days in Assam starting today. The RMC also issued a warning to this effect.
The centre issued a special weather bulletin for Assam this evening. RMC predicted light to moderate rainfall at most places, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall occurring in various places in Assam.
According to the special bulletin, a trough from East Uttar Pradesh to north Odisha now runs from east Bihar to northeast Bay of Bengal across Gangetic West Bengal and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.
‘Moisture incursion due to strong low-level Southerly/ Southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India is very likely during the next five days. Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall or thunderstorms with lightning is very likely to occur over the northeast region during the next five days,” the bulletin said.
Meanwhile, the flood situation has become grim in the Lakhimpur district.
Meanwhile, the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) reported that floods have affected four districts in the state: Lakimphur, Dhemaji, Cachar, and Kamrup (M). Cachar and Kamrup (M) are under the grip of urban floods. The floods have affected 19 villages in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts in the state, as well as over 20,000 people in the two districts.
A correspondent from Lakhimpur adds: Due to heavy downpours in the Lakhimpur district and Arunachal Pradesh since Saturday, the Singara River surged suddenly and breached its right embankment at Sholmoriya under the Naoboicha Revenue Circle on Wednesday. The flood caused by the river already washed away a 100-metre-long stretch of the embankment and inundated around 12 villages under the Naoboicha Revenue Circle, like Konwargaon, Balitika, Chamua Gaon, Sholmuriya, Bishnupur, Phukan Doloni, etc. The rapid surge of the flood damaged and washed away three concrete residential houses owned by Ashok Choudhury and his kin. The flood caused by the river wreaked havoc in the area, affecting people, livestock, and crop areas. The district administration has deployed NDRF personnel to rescue the flood-affected people.
The flood caused by the River Singra also breached the side-bundh at Phulbari Basti, besides damaging the Dolohat to Laluk Kachajuli PWD Road at Dighpukhuri. Erosion and overflowing of water also occurred from Dolohat Tiniali to Laluk Kachajuli PWD Road. On the other hand, the Mohghuli-Borchala road was submerged at Sholmoriya on the same day. Moreover, a total of five villages under Narayanpur Revenue Circle have been submerged by floods caused by two rivers. The affected villages are No. 1 Harmoti, Charaidoloni, No. 2 Borpothar, Jarabari, and No. 3 Borpothar.
