GUWAHATI: The CID arrested former Bajali ASP Gayatri Sonowal, her husband Subhas Chander, and middleman Kishor Baruah in connection with the extortion by police case. The CID took the trio to three-day custody after producing them before the court. The investigators had arrested four others in the case earlier.

According to sources, the CID added more sections {98A/99(3)(4)(5)(6)} from Assam Police Act, 2007 to the case. According to sources, the investigators summoned former Bajali ASP (now DCP protocol) and her husband Subhas Chander to CID headquarters, grilled them, and arrested Sonowal last night. And the CID arrested her husband and middleman, Kishore Baruah, today. After her arrest, Gayatri Sonowal developed hypertension, which required her admission to the GMCH. After her release from the GMCH, the CID took her to their office today.

According to sources, while working as Bajali ASP, Sonowal and her husband mentally and physically tortured supari trader Rabiul Islam, demanding cash. Sonowal introduced her husband as an encounter specialist before the supari trader.

Sources also said that Kishore Baruah was collecting cash on behalf of Gayatri Sonowal in Bajali, and the money was transacted through the accounts of home guards Deepjoy Roy and Nabir Ahmed.

Meanwhile, the DGP went to the CID office and took stock of the investigation into the case today.

Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “If the CID gets proof of the involvement of the Bajali SP in the incident, they will definitely arrest the SP as well. The investigation won’t stop with the involvement of SP or DSP. Initially, investigators take statements from house guards, PSOs, and others. Based on their statements, the investigators go to the next officer. We reached out to the ASP today. There is no question of sparing anyone. Our drive against corruption is not confined to fourth- and third-grade officials. We have taken the drive to all levels. All are under our radar”.
