GUWAHATI: The second phase of the crackdown on child marriage in Assam, conducted in the intervening nights of Monday and Tuesday, led to the arrest of 916.

According to the Assam Police, in a special drive launched against child marriage in the intervening nights of October 2 and 3, 2023, a total of 916 accused have been arrested from across the state, and a total of 706 cases have been registered so far.

Out of 916 people arrested so far, 551 are husbands, 351 are relatives, and 14 solemnizers.

The maximum number of 192 accused were arrested from the Dhubri district, and the next highest number of 142 accused were arrested from the Barpeta district. While fifty-nine of them were arrested from Hailakandi, 50 were arrested from the Kamrup district. Four were arrested in the Kamrup (Metro) district.

The first crackdown on child marriage was carried out in February of this year. The crackdown was launched against thousands of people arrested for being directly or indirectly involved in child marriage cases.

As many as 3,907 people were arrested during the crackdown, and cases were filed against 3,319 people under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012, according to data tabled in the Assam Assembly on September 11, 2023.
