GUWAHATI: The Amguri Nabanirman Samittee (ANS) has moved the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) with a request seeking an investigation into the embezzlement of funds by the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Caste and initiating legal action against it.

Speaking to The Sentinel, ANS president Diganta Saikia said, “The Central and State governments pumped crores of rupees into the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes in the State Government from 2009-10 to 2018-19. However, over Rs 60 crore of the amount was embezzled by departmental employees and suppliers. The CAG report has details of the embezzled amount.”

Saikia said, “We did file a PIL (50/2021) in the High Court in this regard. In its order on September 1, 2021, the High Court asked the State Chief Secretary to constitute a committee of senior officers to look into the allegation of fund embezzlement. The Court also asked the Chief Secretary to do the needful as early as possible, preferably within 12 weeks. The committee constituted by the Chief Secretary also recorded my (petitioner’s) statement. However, we knew nothing about the case after that. And hence, we have moved the PMO.”
