GUWAHATI: Assam's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan has appealed to all xatras to furnish detailed information regarding the quantum of land under their respective possession along with the quantum of their land which is under encroachment. He urged the xatra authorities to provide the requested information to either the Chief Minister or himself as the Minister of the relevant department or the three-member Xatra Commission which was set up recently to deal with the issue of encroachment of xatra land.
Talking to The Sentinel today, the minister emphasized that freeing land belonging to the xatras from encroachers is one of the priorities of the incumbent BJP-led State Government. However, Mohan added, this goal cannot be achieved without the support and cooperation of the extras authorities.
The minister said that when the Xatra Commission submits its report in a year then the Government would examine it and take appropriate follow-up action. He added that the Government will publish an advertisement spelling out the mode of providing the required information to the CM, the minister and the Xatra Commission.
It may be recalled that members of the Xatra Commission visited Barpeta district recently and returned with the conviction that xatra land is indeed under encroachment in that district. The Xatra Commission, which is headed by MLA Pradip Hazarika, has MLAs Rupak Sarmah and Mrinal Saikia as members.
