Gateway To NE: 6,028 High-Tech CCTVs To Keep Vigil on Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Criminals and traffic rule breakers are set to be under the glare of high-resolution and high-tech lenses almost everywhere in Guwahati. All the spadework for the installation of as many as 6,028 high-resolution and high-tech CCTV cameras, including 1,308 for keeping an eye on traffic-rule violations, has been over.

The Guwahati Smart City Ltd (GSCL) has made all necessary arrangements for such surveillance under high-resolution and high-tech lenses in the city. The project will cost around Rs 607 crore. The CCTV cameras will be installed at various locations, including all entry points of the city, soon after getting the nod from the government.

The area and population of Guwahati is rising apace, so is the number of crimes and traffic rule violations. The situation in the metropolitan city seeks a highly developed surveillance system to keep the criminals and traffic-rule breakers at bay.

According to sources, the control room for 24-hour monitoring of the network of 6,028 CCTV cameras in the city will be at Panjabari. It will be manned by 50 staff members.

These state-of-the-art CCTV cameras have virtues like producing clear footages at any moment, besides segregating the occurrences of crimes area-wise.

Over 100 of the existing 290 CCTV cameras installed by the traffic police at 91 locations in the city have not been working. This apart, because of low resolution the existing cameras cannot identify incidents occurring afar.

However, the 1,308 new CCTV cameras to be installed for the surveillance of traffic-rule violations are very powerful. According to sources, as many as 311 cameras will be installed for the detection of only red light signal violations, 997 cameras for automated number plate recognition system and 89 for automated traffic signal violations. Anybody violating red light signal can be detected at the control room from where it will be instantly sent to the concerned traffic police station for action.

The technical committee for implementation of this project has already been formed with the Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Political Department; the Additional Chief Secretary, Guwahati Development Department; the Managing Director of the GSCL; the GMC Commissioner; the MD of AMTRON and the Additional DGP (Modernization and Logistics).
