Gauhati High Court reserves judgement in 2004 Dhemaji blast case

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has reserved its judgement in a case pertaining to the 2004 bomb blast in Dhemaji in which 18 people, mostly children, died and several were injured.

The bomb blast had taken place in a playground during the celebration of Independence Day. In 2019, the Dhemaji District and Sessions court found six people guilty. These included Muhi Handique, Dipanjali Borgohain, Lila Gogoi, Jatin Dowari, Hemen Gogoi and Prasanta Bhuyan. While Hemen Gogoi and Prasanta Bhuyan were sentenced to four years imprisonment, the remaining four were sentenced to life-term imprisonment.

After the Dhemaji District and Sessions court gave its verdict, many criminal appeals (Crl. A) were filed in Gauhati High Court challenging the verdict. The Gauhati High Court concluded hearing in the case and has reserved its judgement.

The bomb blast had taken place during an Independence Day programme. Most of the victims were school children. The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) had then taken responsibility for the blast. There was massive public outcry following the incident as school students had been targetted.
