GUWAHATI: A single-judge bench of Justice Nani Tagia of the Gauhati High Court directed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) not to proceed with the election of its executive committee till July 17, 2023, when the High Court will hear a writ petition (WP-C 3757/2023) filed by the Assam Wrestling Association (AWA) and Assam Olympic Association (AOA) president Ratul Sarma. The bench heard the writ petition today.

The WFI had its executive committee election scheduled for July 11, 2023.

The petitioners sought a direction to the WFI and the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to treat the AWA as an affiliated member of the WFI as stipulated in the WFI constitution, with all consequential rights. The petitioners also prayed for a direction restraining the WFI and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from proceeding further with any stage of the election without issuing a certificate of affiliation to the AWA.
