GUWAHATI: Following a brawl by hostel inmates of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in a bar in the Christian Basti area of the city on Thursday evening, disciplinary action was taken against the students by the institute’s administration on Friday. Three students, including an intern, were expelled for six months from the institute and indefinitely from the hostel.

The three expelled students are Subhrangshu Saikia, an intern from Golaghat; Shashanka Kashyap, a final-year student from Mangaldoi; and Hrishikesh Bipaksha, a 3rd-year student from Hojai, informed college authorities.

15 other inmates of Hostel No. 4 involved in the brawl were expelled from the hostel for a period of three months.

The principal of the GMCH, Achyut Ch. Baishya, while addressing a press conference earlier today, said, “The three students have accepted that they went to drink at the bar. Since they have broken the hostel rules, the three of them have been expelled indefinitely on disciplinary grounds. Moreover, they have been expelled for six months from the institute.” This came after the students confessed about drinking at the bar.

It should be noted that a drunken brawl involving the students of the GMCH took place at a bar located in the city’s Christian Basti area at around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. According to reports, the MBBS students from Hostel No. 4 were accused of getting drunk and attacking the manager of the bar.

After the clash erupted, 15 other students from the GMCH arrived at the bar, and the situation turned ugly, according to sources.

Disciplinary action has also been initiated against the 15 other inmates of the same hostel. They have been expelled from the hostel for a period of three months.

The staff and management of the bar sustained critical injuries in the clash, reports said.

“We have decided to install CCTV cameras at the hostel premises to check that all rules and regulations are followed. We request that, along with the college authorities, the police also take equal measures to look into these issues. We will not have any objections to that,” Baishya added.

It was also reported that the manager has been hospitalized on account of the injuries sustained by him during the clash.
