GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the indigenous people of Assam to generate work culture among them and take it as a challenge to do all sorts of works like driving, vegetable vending, rickshaw pulling, carpentry, and masonry, all done by people from the 'Miyan' community in the state now.
Talking to the media here today, the Chief Minister said, "This is a fact that the Assamese people work less than the Miyans. Because of this, all sorts of work has gone to the Miyans, leading to an increase in their earnings. On the days of Eid, Guwahati experiences a lack of vehicular traffic and nearly blank vegetable markets as both drivers and vendors go to celebrate Eid."
He further said, "I tell my fellow MLAs to generate a few drivers and other workers from their respective constituencies regularly. The Assamese people have to take this as a challenge to grow a work culture among them."
The grassroots economy in the state is at the hands of the Miyan community, as the Assamese youths shy away from selling fish, doing masonry, carpentry, and such other works. In Guwahati alone, around 80 percent of the wages for construction work go to people from the Miyan community, as the Assamese youths shy away from doing such work. Construction is a potential sector for employment. However, due to the lack of work culture among the Assamese youths, the huge opportunities in this sector go to the hard-working Miyans only.
