GUWAHATI: Following the standing order from the Gauhati High Court, the Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner has directed the GMC to demolish 26 bridges over the Bahini River that are obstructing the natural flow of water and causing waterlogging in different places in Guwahati.
Earlier, the DC issued an order to demolish 89 bridges over the Bahini River.
The Deputy Commissioner partially modified his earlier order (DDMA-K-M 181/2022/197, dated 02/03/2023). In pursuance of the order passed by the High Court in respect of PIL (18/2015) regarding the rectification of 26 bridges over the Bahini River that are obstructing the natural flow of water and causing waterlogging problems in different places along the Bahini River, the DC directed the GMC to demolish these bridges as per the direction of the High Court immediately for smooth flow of storm water during the rainy season and to carry out effective de-siltation of the Bahini River.
The DC also directed the Dispur Circle Officer to provide all necessary administrative support during the execution of the work by GMC.
Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal tweeted, “As per the new order, only 26 bridges instead of 89 will be demolished, which are badly obstructing the Bahini River and have become a major cause of artificial flooding within Guwahati city. Public inconvenience has been kept on notice.”
