GUWAHATI: Driving on the Gorchuk-Pamohi-Rani Road is a nightmare now. This is an alternative route to the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) at Borjhar. Nowadays, unaccountable potholes and craters are spread on this important link road. This is despite the fact that the State Government wants the people to use this road so that there is less traffic congestion on the National Highway.
The alternative road was built during the previous Congress regime. It also leads to various areas of South Kamrup and Goalpara district. One can also follow this route to visit Deepor Beel and the Accoland Park. The offices of the Border Security Force and National Disaster Response Force are also situated along this road.
A resident of Rani area, Jatin Rabha said, "Many people used to take this road to the LGBI airport as it was free from traffic congestion. But lack of maintenance by the PWD has damaged the road to such an extent that huge potholes can be found at many stretches of this road. Besides, heavy trucks that daily ply to and from the several godowns at the area have adversely affected the route. It needs immediate repairing."
The general secretary of All Kamrup (Metro) District Students' Union, Dibyajyoti Medhi said, "It seems that the present government is more interested in constructing flyovers to get more publicity. Construction of flyovers is fine. But an important road — connecting the LGBI airport, the Deepor Beel, and the Goalpara district — is lying in a pathetic condition. Can the PWD explain as to why it has not done anything to keep this road in good condition?"
