LAKHIMPUR: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today offered prayers to the ancestors for the well-being of every citizen of the state.

The Chief Minister attended the Me-Dam-Me-Phi organized centrally at Habung in the Dhemaji district by the Cultural Affairs Department and the Habung Development Management Committee.

The Chief Minister took part in offering prayers to the ancestors. He inaugurated the Habung Chao-Chen-Ren and Holung Ho-Phi building constructed with funds from the State Government.

The Chief Minister said, "Even though Me-Dam-Me-Phi is a spiritual and traditional event, it has greater significance. It provides us with the opportunity of paying tributes to our ancestors and earlier generations. The blessing of the ancestors helps the present generations to march ahead. I offer my prayers to our earlier generations for the well-being of every citizen of Assam."

He said that Me-Dam-Me-Phi is not restricted anymore to the Ahom community alone. "It has become bigger and universal now. We'll preserve and develop historic Habung, the second capital of Swargadeo Siu-Ka-Pha, along with other important places of the Ahom rule such as Tipam, Charaideo etc., and make them tourist destinations," he said.

The Chief Minister asserted, "The history of Assam and that of Tai Ahoms are not different. The glorious chapter of the 600-year Ahom rule has always made every Assamese proud. The Government is committed to preserving the legacy of Ahoms. The State Government will organize two international symposiums, one each in New Delhi and Mumbai, this year and make a documentary in English and Hindi on the life and works of the great Ahom General."

The Chief Minister also announced that the Government would take steps to develop the maidam of Lachit Borphukan at Jorhat. The Chief Minister called on the All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU) to help arrange 50 bighas of land near the maidam for the purpose. He announced that the Government would take a project for making Rang Ghar the centre of Assam's rich cultural heritage covering an area of 100 bighas.

The Chief Minister spelt out measures for the development of Habung, including the construction of a guest house by PWD near the Ho-Phi building, setting up an ethnic village at Habung to showcase the traditions, customs, cuisine and attires of various ethnic communities, among others.

The Chief Minister called on the ATASU for setting up an international-level auditorium and a Tai Ahom Museum. He directed Education Minister and Dhemaji MLA Dr Ranoj Pegu to submit proposals to develop all roads leading to Habung. He said that the government would erect the boundary wall and the gate of Habung Chao-Chen-Ren ground soon.

Following the demand from the Ahom community, the Chief Minister announced Rs 20 lakh to build Chao-Chen-Ren in 50 villages.
