GUWAHATI: Floods in Assam have adversely affected the farmers of the State. To provide succour to the farmers, the government will bring them under various government schemes.

According to the agriculture department figures, total 3,530 villages in 29 districts of the State have been hit by floods and 2,71,332 farm families in these villages have been affected. Crops like summer paddy, early Ahu and Boro paddy, regular Ahu, summer maize, Rabi maize, black gram, green gram, jute, sugarcane etc. have been destroyed while 1,07, 036 hectares of cropland have been submerged in flood water.

Talking to The Sentinel, State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said, "The department has already made a preliminary estimate of the crop damages. Once the final estimate is prepared, the department will submit a proposal to the government for providing compensation. The affected farmers will be brought under various government schemes to provide them aid."

The minister said that the department had decided to start community nurseries where paddy saplings would be grown. Bora said, "These paddy saplings will be distributed free of cost to affected farmers.

"Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed agriculture department officials to ensure proper implementation of the flagship schemes of the Central and State governments. I went to Jorhat and Golaghat districts today to review the implementation of the flagship schemes with department officials."
