GUWAHATI: "All this while, Bir Lachit Barphukan's valour had been celebrated in Assam only. But now the government has taken initiative to give recognition to Bir Lachit Barphukan at national and global platforms. The central programme of the 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Barphukan will be held from November 23 to November 25 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. "When the world will recognize Lachit Barphukan's bravery, Assam will also get respect and recognition on a global platform," said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing media persons in Guwahati today.
He said that many considered Bir Lachit Barphukan as an Ahom Bir only. "But he was Assam Bir, Bharat Bir and Vishwa Bir," he said. The Chief Minister went on to say that Bir Lachit Barphukan was no less a brave military general than Napoleon Bonaparte.
Chief Minister said that he had written to his counterparts across the country to include a chapter on Lachit Barphukan in the textbooks of educational institutions in their respective States. In fact, the Chief Ministers of the other north-eastern states, he said, have urged the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to include a chapter on the history and culture of the region in the NCERT syllabus.
The Chief Minister said that a Lachit Bhavan would be set up in the Police Academy at Hyderabad, and urged people to light lamps in their houses on the evening of November 24. Regarding the essay competition organized by the Assam Government on Bir Lachit Barphukan, the Chief Minister said that around 17 lakh entries had been received in various languages. "This shows the universal appeal of Bir Lachit Barphukan's valour and patriotism," he said.
