GST evasion of over Rs 22 crore detected in Assam, one arrested

GUWAHATI: For the first time in Assam, a GST (goods and services tax) evader has been arrested. The BIEO (Bureau of Investigation Economic Offences) on Sunday arrested Subhash Kumar Singh for evasion of GST to the tune of over Rs 22 crore.

Singh, a resident of Fatasil Ambari, is the proprietor of a firm namely M/s SK sales located at Fancy Bazar here. The BIEO stated that the firm dealing in zarda, pan masala, chewing tobacco, agarbatti etc was found to have indulged in large scale tax evasion for the past two years.

The calculated amount of GST evaded inclusive of penalty, interest etc. is more than Rs 22 crore. During the inspection of the firm, the BIEO officials seized a mobile, laptop and many incriminating documents.

As per the provision of the GST Act, GST evasion of more than Rs 5 crore entails compulsory arrest of the tax evader, the offence being cognizable and non-bailable.
