GUWAHATI: Intelligence agencies sounded alert given the alarming developments in Afghanistan and the reported sneaking of radicals into India from Bangladesh to join the Taliban.

The security forces arrested a gun runner – Nurul Islam – and his accomplice Liang Khyiamon on Monday. It was a joint operation by the BSF and the Assam police. The security personnel killed the gun runner when he was trying to escape with the rifle of a policeman.

BSF got specific inputs about the movement of Nurul Islam and his accomplice onboard the Silchar-Guwahati Fast Train and was preparing to get down at Badarpur junction. The BSF took the help of Assam Police as mandated and recovered six pistols from Nurul (38). Nurul hailed from Baraoigram, 15 km from Karimganj. His accomplice Khyiamon (22) is from the Tuensang town of Nagaland. The arms were to be from Nagaland.

According to a police source, the security personnel took Nurul to a nondescript place near Marjatkandi cross-examination past midnight to ascertain the source of the arms, their delivery destination and the purpose behind it. Are these meant for subversive activities or some extremist elements? But before he any grilling, he tried to run away by snatching the gun of a policeman.

However, the personnel shot at Nurul while he was on the run. He was critically injured. The personnel rushed him to Karimganj Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A senior police officer said that they took Nurul to Martajkandi based on his confessional statement. However, before the BSF and police team reached there, the contact persons disappeared.

The Nurul and Khyiamon were coming from Dimapur.
