GUWAHATI: With the Covid-19 pandemic becoming the major cause for the rising rate of depression, anxiety and stress, there has been an alarming rise in the number of suicidal deaths in the city. As per statistics of the city police, Guwahati Police Commissionerate recorded 373 suicidal deaths from January 1 to December 20, 2021.
Among the three police districts under the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, the West Police District recorded the highest suicidal deaths with 141 cases, followed by the East Police District with 127 cases and the Central Police District with 105 cases.
The Fatasil Ambari Police Station registered the highest suicidal deaths with 79 cases, followed by Dispur Police Station with 42 cases and Azara Police Station with 33 cases. Among the 20 police stations, only the All Women Police Station (AWPS), Panbazar did not register a single case of suicidal death during the period.
The causes of depression, according to the police, might be cash crunch, job loss, family problems, failed love life, fall in social status etc.
According to police sources, people committing suicide do not like to share their mental agony with others. The state police are contemplating conducting a study of suicide-prone people.
The state police will launch a helpline soon for such cases.
