Guwahati-Numaligarh pipeline: Cooperation sought from obstructing MLAs
STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI: Following 'frequent interventions' by a few local MLAs in the laying of pipeline from Guwahati-Numaligarh under Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the Northeast, the Assam Assembly Speaker had to write separate letters to all legislators seeking their cooperation to the project of national and regional importance.
IGGL (Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd) wrote a letter to Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary recently stating that it (IGGL) observed frequent interventions from a few local MLAs in the laying of pipelines between Guwahati to Numaligarh, leading to obstruction of the project. IGGL requested the Speaker to ensure that the MLAs cooperate to make the project a success.
Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for the Northeast will provide clean and eco-friendly fuel (natural gas) to the industrial, commercial, domestic and transport sectors in the region. It shall also enable optimal utilization of domestic gas services.
This will not only ensure a regular supply of natural gas to the region, but also link silo gas fields in the region for their optimum utilization without resorting to flaring off. Reliable natural gas supply shall enable the provision of (i) piped cooking gas to domestic households, (ii) CNG as a green fuel for transportation in Northeast India, (iii) gas for heating and power generation in industries and tea gardens, and (iv) industrial gas as raw materials for many industries. When the project gets completed, one can expect a real industrial revolution in the state with the huge generation of direct and indirect employment, besides socio-economic development in a considerable measure.
As part of hydrocarbon vision 2030 for Northeast, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is linking Assam and the rest of the northeastern region to the national gas grid through two pipeline projects – Barauni to \Guwahati Pipeline Ltd (BGPL) of GAIL India Ltd and the North East Gas Grid (NEGG) of Indradhanush Gas Grid Ltd (IGGL). IGGL is a joint venture of IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, OIL and NRL.
GAIL Ltd is laying a pipeline from Barauni to Guwahati. This IGGL pipeline network will create the North East Gas Grid passing through 12 Assam districts – Kamrup (M), Kamrup, Darrang, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karimganj and Cachar.
