GUWAHATI: The dry weather and air pollution are behind the mounting infections due to the H3N2 variant of influenza. The vulnerable sections are aged people and infants.

Speaking to the media today, GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma said, “This variant has created havoc in Delhi and other states. The symptoms are fever, runny nose, cough, nausea, diarrhea, neurological problems, etc. Patients with co-morbidities like renal failure, diabetes, cancer, and chest infections face problems.”

Dr Sarma said, “The cough continues for about three weeks and the fever for three to five days. In the first three days, such patients should remain in isolation as the disease is contagious. Wearing a mask and following hand hygiene are a must, as in COVID-19, to prevent its spread. Intake of vegetables and vitamin C are advisable to boost the immunity of the body.”

On self-medication, Dr Sarma cautioned patients against taking medicines on their own from pharmacists. “The infection needs various tests. They should not skip all such tests. Patients suffering from such infections should visit hospitals,” he said.

According to NHM Assam sources, H3N2 is not a virus as lethal as COVID-19, and the State has no severe cases.
