GUWAHATI: All business owners and their employees of the city have been urged to go for voluntary COVID-19 tests within August 10. Making this appeal at a meeting with traders' organizations here on Tuesday, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa said, "This has become necessary as the spike in coronavirus cases here has been particularly noticed among the business community. As many as 60 per cent of the people tested positive at the Pandu, Maligaon, and Ward numbers 15 and 16 areas were either business owners or their employees."
He further said, "Besides, it's a matter of concern that many employees of a number of business establishments and also customers are not wearing masks. Looking at the present spike in cases, mask-wearing must be made mandatory for both customers and the employees of any business firm. This is compulsory in Delhi and Mumbai.
"The number of positive cases in Guwahati has already come down due to lockdown. If the owners of city business enterprises and also their employees voluntarily go for 100 percent COVID-19 tests, the number of corona-positive cases will further decrease. They can also seek the help of Health workers from the 100 COVID Testing Centres across the city. The Health workers are always ready to test the people at the respective business premises."
Minister Sarma twitted in the evening, "Two more COVID-19 patients, Dulu Rani Sarkar (70) and Hemanta Buragohain (50), have succumbed to their infections today. Both were from Kamrup (Metro) and admitted at GMCH, Guwahati. My prayers and condolences to their bereaved families."
In another tweet, he said, "My best appreciation for the hard work by Health Department teams who continue their mission of tracking and tracing those who may be infected by coronavirus. Today, on July 28, our test figures crossed 8 lakh – 8,02,674 to be precise. We started our journey with the first test for COVID-19 on February 7. Well done. I request all to come forward to test."
