* IIT Guwahati students being offered Rs 70 lakh annual salary

GUWAHATI: Hope for high-salaried jobs arises among youths in Assam following the recent successful virtual placement drive at the IIT Guwahati amidst the ongoing Covid pandemic.
Despite the uncertain and gloomy job scenario arising out of the current pandemic, the number of Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) offered at the IIT Guwahati this year is equivalent to that of 2019. The development has brought hope and optimism among youths studying in other leading educational institutions in the State.
The completely virtual placement drive began at the IIT Guwahati on December 2and will continue till December 15. The exercise has so far attracted close to 128 companies such as Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Adobe, Quadaye, Oracle, Walmart, Bajaj, American Express, Uber, Accenture Japan and MTX, among others.
The opening day (December 1) saw 69 placement offers;and it went up to 486 till Wednesday (December 3), including the 133 PPOs, with a highest domestic salary package of Rs 70 lakh per annum compared to Rs 52 lakh last year. There were four international offers at the end of the second day. The encouraging development has prompted theDirector of IIT Guwahati, T.G. Sitharam to assert that that the COVID-19 pandemic has not affected placements.
"I am hopeful to appear for a similar virtual placement drive at my university. There are still enough jobs in the market. Only thing that we have to learn to grab those jobs by adjusting ourselves with the new normal situation created by the pandemic,"said a student studying MBA at Gauhati University.
The leading institutes such as Cotton University, Tezpur University, Don Bosco University, Gauhati University, IIMShillong are planning to organize virtual placement drives at their respective campuses within December or by the early part of 2021.
