IMD predicts heavy rainfall for 2-3 days; Red Alert issued for three districts in lower Assam

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, predicted heavy rainfall activity over Assam during the next two to three days. It sounded a red alert for Dhubri, Kokrajhar, and South Salmara districts and an orange alert for Chirang, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Baksa, and Golpara districts on October 5.

In IMD parlance, red alert means ‘warning and take action’ and orange alert means ‘be prepared’.

Regarding the red alert, the IMD predicted heavy rainfall (7–11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm in 24 hours), with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm and more in 24 hours) very likely over Kokrajhar, South Salmara, and Dhubri districts.

The IMD issued a special weather bulletin for Assam. According to the bulletin, a low-pressure area lies over western parts of Gangetic West Bengal and its adjoining Jharkhand, and the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea levels, tilting southwards with height, and it is very likely to move nearly eastwards across West Bengal during the next two to three days. Due to the expected movement of this system, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity, from heavy to very heavy, along with extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places, is very likely to occur during the next two to three days.

The areas that received the most rainfall in the past 24 hours are Rangaganadi NT Road Crossing and North Lakhimpur in the Lakhimpur district, Manas NH Xing and Beki Road Bridge in the Barpeta district, and Tinsukia.

The IMD also predicted heavy rainfall activity for the northeastern region for the next two to three days.
