GUWAHATI: The Government of Assam is initiating measures to simplify the land-allotment policy among the indigenous landless people. Now, the beneficiaries will be getting land 'patta' directly. Earlier, such beneficiaries had to proceed through a series of time-consuming processes in this regard. In this regard, the State Cabinet will soon amend the 'Land Policy-2019'. Following the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the R&DM (Revenue & Disaster Management) Department is preparing the 'Cabinet Memorandum', informed sources.

According to the 'Land Policy-2019', the indigenous landless people were required to first apply for 'land allotment'. Then, the R&DM Department or the DCs (Deputy Commissioners) would provide 'land allotment' to the eligible indigenous applicants.

However, after three years of continuous physical possession of the allotted land, these people were required to again apply for ' land patta'. Moreover, the beneficiaries are still barred from selling their 'patta' till 15 years from the day of possession of the land.

Talking to The Sentinel, R&DM Minister Jogen Mohan said, "After amendment of the 'Land Policy-2019', the indigenous people will be benefitted to a large extent."
