A birth certificate is a legal document. Every birth in Assam has to be registered with the State Government under the regulations of the Birth Act, 1969. Apart from the legality associated with the birth certificate, this document is a must for a whole lot of purposes without which life is simply not possible. Enrolling your kid(s) in school, proving their age and identity when needed, obtaining a driving license, marriage, and issuance of marriage certificate, signing up for sports, obtaining passports, etc are some that aren’t possible without birth certificates.
Getting the birth certificate of your kid is very simple if you act on time. However, the process gets delayed and complicated once you don’t drop your application well within the stipulated time.
Within 21 days of the birth of the baby, you need to collect the prescribed application form from the office specified for the purpose by the State Health Department and submit it after filling it up. Doctor’s certificate is a must for the birth certificate. In Kamrup (M) district, the office of the Joint Director of Health Services has specified 18 centers for giving and receiving birth certificate applications. If you don’t apply within 21 days, you’ll have to pay a fine of Rs 2 for application till the 28th day. In the event of not applying within 28 days, your application needs an affidavit, besides Rs 5 as fine. In the event of not applying within a year, besides the affidavit, you will have to obtain an order from the deputy commissioner and submit the voter IDs of the baby’s parents along with a fine of Rs 10. In case of babies born in house, certificates from doctors are a must.
