GUWAHATI: The Department of School Education has asked the Directorate of Elementary Education and the Directorate of Secondary Education to investigate and crack down on the ‘illegal’ D. El. Ed. and B. Ed. certificates obtained from West Bengal universities and produced by many teachers of the state. The Secretary of the Department of School Education issued this letter following an instruction received from the Chief Minister.

What is significant is that all such certificates from West Bengal Universities have 90 percent or above marks.

The matter first came to light when a source drew the attention of the Chief Minister to the whole lot of B.Ed. and B.El. Ed. Certificates with very high percentage scoring submitted by a large section of teachers in Assam.

The source said, “It has come to my attention that many individuals in Assam are obtaining B.Ed. certificates from West Bengal with exceptionally high parentage, which raises suspicions about the authenticity of these certificates. Such certificates may be obtained through illegal means such as fraud, bribery, or other forms of malpractice. The possession of such fraudulent certificates can have serious consequences, especially in the field of education, where qualified and deserving candidates may lose out on opportunities due to unfair competition from those who possess fake certificates. Moreover, it can also have serious implications for the reputation of our state and country, as it undermines the integrity and credibility of our education system. Therefore, I urge you to take immediate action to investigate and crack down on the issuance of these illegal B.Ed. certificates from West Bengal. I request that you initiate a thorough investigation to identify the individuals and organizations involved in this racket and to take stringent legal action against them.”

Meanwhile, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said, “The issue of fake certificates came to the attention of the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister has issued an order for a thorough investigation. The back-office verification of the certificates is under investigation now.”
