OUR CORRESPONDENT,
BONGAIGAON: On the Occasion of the World Environment Day, the State Environment and Forest Department of Assam, Aie Valley Division organized an event of the plantation where the initiative of Miyawaki Method was inaugurated. The Miyawaki Method of Afforestation is a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Prof. (Dr) Akira Miyawaki that helps build dense, native forests.
The growth in the approach is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times denser than usual. Under this approach, dozens of native species are planted in the same area, close to each other which ensures that the plants receive sunlight only from the top, and grow upwards than sideways.
The green surface of a multi-stratal forest of the potential natural vegetation is about thirty times as large as that of a mono-stratal lawn, which needs periodical maintenance. As for absorbing and accumulating CO2 multi-stratal native forests have a much larger capacity than mono-stratal forests.
This venture is taken forward here by a group named Forests of Future under the supervision of Divisional Forest Officer AS Arief.
The event was organized at the Biodiversity Park, Chitkagaon, Bongaigaon.
This method is inspired by the botanist Akira Miyawaki and Afforestt. Previously, a similar initiative was taken by Dr SK Dutta, Additional Director of Central Pollution Control Board, North-Eastern Region at Saraighat Lake, Amingaon. It was a CSIR project of Guwahati Refinery that implemented the project first in Assam.
The main motive of the group behind this initiative is to restore the ecosystem by growing such mini-forest in urban areas.
