GUWAHATI: The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) here, on Monday, gave 10-day Police custody to Pradip Kumar – the proxy candidate who had appeared in the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination)-Mains in the place of Neel Nakshatra Das at the Ion Digital Zone at Borjhar here on September 5.

Guwahati Police with help from Delhi Police had arrested Pradip Kumar from a location in Delhi on November 29, and brought to the city in the evening.

A Police source said, "Pradip Kumar hails from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. A meritorious student, he got his Engineering degree from the reputed Delhi Engineering College. Pradip Kumar conducts coaching classes in Delhi. He also appeared in the UPSC exams several times. Pradip Kumar got the offer to appear as a proxy candidate during the lockdown period. Earlier also, he was in Guwahati with a similar offer. But that exam got cancelled then.

The source added, "This time, he was contacted by Global Edulite through some middlemen working for Bhargav Deka, the owner of this counselling agency located at Ambari in Guwahati. Pradip Kumar got Rs 6 lakh to appear as a proxy candidate. For that purpose, he reached Guwahati on September 4, appeared in the exam at the centre on September 5, and later flew back to Delhi that very day.
